Blaeu, Prostant apud Wolfgang, Janssonio-Waesbergios, Boom, à Someren, & Goethals, 1687, 8vo., full parchment spitsel binding with handsewn endbands, there is a handwritten title in ink on spine, with the city crest of Alkmaar in gold on the front and back (upside down on the back), the closure ribbons are lost. It concerns a prize binding (also known as "prize book", in Dutch: "prijsband"). Prize binding were offered to students in Latin schools as an award for their achievements. The design usually featured the city crest of the city the school was situated, in this case Alkmaar. In most case there is a handwritten dedication stating to which student the book was awarded and why. A dedication like that is not present in this copy. There are three ownership signatures. One on the endpaper in pencil: J. Radaeus, 1752. Two on the titlepage in ink: David Radaeus, 1737 and again J. Radaeus, 1752 (possibly Van den Rade?). [32] + 439 + [38] pp., the parchment has inkstains on the back, a few spitsels are broken, the endpapers on the inside of the covers are damaged, a few pages have cuts or tears (65, 79, 289, 308, 320 and the last page of the index.), the construction of the bookblock is solid. Engraved half title (J. Visscher sculp.), printer's mark on title page ("indefessus agendo" tireless action), some decorated initials, small engaved portraits throughout the text, the book is written in Latin, but words in Greek and Arabic are referred to in the elaborate footnotes. l This is an edition with commentary of the only surviving complete work of the Roman historian Cornelius Nepos (ca. 100-24 B.C.)
