- Charles Waldstein (later Sir Charles Walston (1856-1927)) was a classical archaeologist, art historian, and public intellectual educated at Cambridge and active in both Britain and the United States. Writing in the aftermath of the First World War, he reflects on the moral and political crisis of modern Europe and argues for a reconstruction of society grounded in enduring ethical principles. The study is structured as a wide-ranging historical and philosophical essay. It moves from an analysis of the Great War and the failures of contemporary democracy to a reconsideration of leadership, education, religion, and civic responsibility.
