- This is a critical edition of a late-medieval Latin manuscript from the Library of the Major Seminary in Liège (manuscript 6 F 18). It contains a text by the Augustinian monk and canon Arnoldus Gheyloven (ca. 1375-1442), edited and published by Anton G. Weiler for the series Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis (no. 212). The edition includes the Latin text with an English introduction, bibliography, and indexes. Arnoldus Gheyloven was a Dutch jurist and theologian who studied in Vienna, Bologna, and Padua and around 1407 became a member of the Brothers of the Common Life / the regular canons of Windesheim. He wrote approximately thirty works in the fields of canon law, moral theology, and spirituality and was active within the constellation of the Devotio Moderna, which placed personal piety, ethics, and priestly culture at the center. The preserved work is a summa of moral theology, canon law, and Christian spirituality intended as a textbook for students preparing for the priesthood (for example in Leuven or among the Brothers in Deventer). It treats faith, moral duties, the sacraments, and the life of the priest — with particular attention to preparation for confession and pastoral practice in the pre-Reformation church.
