Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German writer, statesman, and natural philosopher, central to German Classicism and European Romanticism. John Anster (1793-1867) was an Irish translator known for his English rendering of Goethe's Faust, which helped popularize the work in the English-speaking world. Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was an Irish stained-glass artist and illustrator whose distinctive style became highly influential in early 20th-century book illustration.
