The first chapters [ch.1-5] contribute a sound background to the linguistic study that is to follow (…). The core of the book consists of a meticulous description of Mycenaean grammar divided into phonology (ch.6), nominal and verbal morphology (ch.7), and vocabulary and syntax (ch.8). (…) The relationship of Mycenaean to later Greek dialects and the language of Homer, and its position with respect to the development of the Homeric corpus are discussed in chapter.9, which also provides a chronology of the major linguistic changes that occurred in Greek between the second and the first millennium. The book ends with a useful section of Linear B texts including transcription and translation into German, a vast index of all Mycenaean words and an extensive bibliography (which is anticipated by selected, up-to-date references at the end of each chapter). After finishing this lengthy work, readers will be struck by the sheer volume of data examined and by the clarity of its layout, designed to make Mycenaean accessible even to those who do not possess a prior knowledge of linguistics. However, an approach that privileges description and statistics over critical analysis runs the risk of being not much more than a thorough, but arid, compilation, and so of losing much of its potential appeal to the uninitiated.
