A salt print from a paper negative by the French archaeologist Auguste Salzmann (1824–1872). Printed by "Imprimerie photographique de Blanquart-Évrard, à Lille", credit and title is printed on the mount under the photograph. This print comes from the 1856 publication by "Gide et J. Baudry, éditeurs".
Salzmann, who was a painter of landscapes and religious scenes, also became one of the first to use photography as a means of archaeological study. He is, together with Louis De Clercq, the most important photographer from the time of calotype whose work is not defined by Egyptology. His 1854 Jerusalem images are inspired by the work of archaeologist Félix de Saulcy. Salzmann stayed for four months in Jerusalem, gathering almost 200 images, until being forced by a fever to return to France [Wikipedia].
The salt print is in good condition for its age. Only two pin holes in the upper corners of the salt print. Foxing on the trimmed mount.
