In this study we will discuss Hindus and Christians from the last two centuries who have contributed to the development of Christology in India. They share a fascination with the figure of Jesus Christ but have very different views as to what he can mean in the Indian context. There are various ways to sketch an image of Jesus Christ, but at heart it always concerns a fertile encounter between Western preachers of the Gospel and
adherents of Eastern religions, between Hindus and Christians, between European and Indian church members. The dialogue on the meaning of Christ appears to be able to set a great deal in motion.
What that dialogue has produced in India can als be of great importance for the West. In any case, that is the conviction that lies at the foundarion of this study.
