It looks at the tensions in church, state and society which caused witchcraft increasingly to be regarded as a threat and to be legislated against in the mid sixteenth century. It explores the nature of witchcraft beliefs at a time when magic, alchemy and astrology were respected branches of science, and considers how these beliefs came to be held by a wide variety of people, ranging from the simple to the highly educated.
