The event immediately observed from the opposite end of the Gulf, where the great naval base of the imperial fleet is located, on Miseno. The commander of the base, Pliny the Elder, immediately takes action. As the Admiral is about to embark on a fast liburna he receives a desperate plea for help: the only way out for many inhabitants of the coastline are his ships! He immediately arranges for an emergency rescue mission, preparing his powerful quadriremes for the operations and directed them to the coastline between Ercolano and Pompeii. For this moment on no one sees Pliny again nor does anyone know what happened to him. Some archeological remains dating to the beginning of the last century and that so far been neglected, could perhaps tell u of his final hours and implicitly of the success of the mission.
