Shorebirds are a very popular group of birds among birders of all standards, though their identification is often a challenge. Written by renowned shorebird expert Richard Chandler, Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere is the definitive shorebird photographic guide, covering in detail - with special emphasis on identification - all 134 species and subspecies that occur in the northern hemisphere. Accompanied by 830 carefully selected colour photographs providing coverage of virtually all subspecies, ages and plumages in the region. With detailed text and range maps, succinct summaries of moult and plumage cycles, a useful table showing moult terminologies, and tables showing the differences between similar species and subspecies. Taxonomically, the guide is arranged in the familiar field guide order, with the requisite generally accepted splits, and each species gets two to six pages of images and information, arranged into identification of juvenile, immature and adult plumages, calls, habitat and distribution, racial variation and similar species. Making the reader aware of the possibility of exceptions, variation and intergrades, helpful advice and information is given for birds in the field and hand.
