Roses are almost certainly the most popular of all garden flowers throughout the world. Not many rose growers, however, realise that there are many thousands of different varieties in cultivation. This book provides a concise, visual guide to the wide range within the Rose family. Over 500 superb photographs of the finest and most interesting kinds are reproduced in full colour on 96 pages. Old roses – new roses – species roses –from 4 inches high to 40 feet tall, in a multitude of subtle shades and colour combinations – even the green rose – are illustrated. The illustrations are grouped into 18 categories while the complementary descriptions – over 800 in all – are in strictly alphabetical order for quick and easy reference. The descriptions give such details as usual height, flowering times, scent, and any special uses or requirements, as well as the raiser’s name and the date of introduction of the rose, when known. All the most widely used synonyms are cross referred. The Introduction begins with a brief history of the rose, outlining how the astonishing developments of recent years have been attained. Cultivation, training, pruning, propagation and other practical matters are also dealt with and illustrated by black and white photographs.
