The Encyclopedia of Visual Art subsumes six approaches to visual art: a History of Art, a Biographical Dictionary of Artists, a Glossary of Terms, three sets of illustrated studies (Special Studies, Comparative Studies, Media Studies), a summan.' guide to Museums and Galleries of the World, and an encyclopedic Index. The locations of these elements are given in the Contents list on page viii. The aims of the Encyclopedia and the nature of its construction are discussed by Norbert Lynton in his Introduction (pages xi—xiii).
Detailed Contents lists of the chapters and special features in the History of Art can be found on page ix of this volume and at the beginnings of volumes II—V. Special features are of two kinds: Gallery Studies, which take the broader view, compare and contrast works of art; Close Studies bring readers face to face with individual works.
The Bibliographies and lists of suggestions for Further Reading usually specif- latest editions. Where possible, details of publication in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America are given.
With regard to the list of Museums and Galleries (vol. X, pp. 163—76), it should be noted that many works of art are housed in churches, monasteries, temples, etc, throughout the world. The list makes no attempt to include such locations.
The Index (vol. X, p. 177) contains brief biographical details of many artists not included in the Biographical
Dictionary.
Technical matter in the contributions and captions has been edited according to the following conventions. Titles of works are given in English, except where a title in another language is more familiar. Wherever possible the locations of works are provided, by reference to the full name of an institution and to
the town or city in which it stands. Names of institutions in English, French, German, and Itahan are normally given in their original forms. Others have been translated except where an original name is familiar, or because an idiomatic translation is not possible. The names of some major institutions have been abbreviated. A statement of location does not necessarily imply a statement about ownership.
In the captions dimensions are given in the order: height x width ( X depth in the case of sculpture). Measurements for most works are given to the nearest centimeter with, in parentheses, an imperial equivalent to the nearest inch. Where possible, the media of works are also given, but for many works, especially those from the period of European painting when tempera and oils were both in common use, media have not been specified in full because the binders and pigments of such works have not been analyzed.
