Roman Signer is a Swiss artist known for his work in sculpture, art installations, photography, and video. His pieces often involve action sculptures and are associated with land art and performance art. "Controlled destruction, not destruction for its own sake," is how he describes his approach. Born in 1938 in Appenzell, Switzerland, he studied at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich and Lucerne, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland. Influenced by artists like Jean Tinguely, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Signer has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Prix Meret Oppenheim, the Kunstpreis Aachen, the Kulturpreis der Stadt St. Gallen, the Konstanzer Kunstpreis, the Kulturpreis St. Gallen, the Kulturpreis Konstanz, the Kulturpreis Bregenz, the Eidgenössisches Kunststipendium, and the Kiefer-Hablitzel Stipendium. His works have been exhibited at Kunstmuseum St.Gallen, Bonnefantenmuseum, and Kunstmuseum Solothurn.
