From the publisher : The purpose of this study is to survey and analyze the development of Dutch economics during the nineteenth century. A considerable part of the study will focus on the cultural, political, and economic context in which nineteenth century Dutch economics developed rather than on economic thought per se. It was felt that the contextual factors relevant to economic thinking were nearly as important as the economic ideas themselves, particularly for an understanding of progress or stagnation in this field of knowledge. In Chapters II and III a sketch of the historical background of the period has been attempted as well as a description of the structure and development of the Dutch economy during the period covered. Chapter III has to do also with some non-academic economic views, particularly those of a King and of a cabinet member in Holand in the early part of the nineteenth century. In Chapter IV the structure of higher education is examined with respect to the role and status of economics in Dutch universities. Certain deterrents to the develop- ment of economics were found to be inherent in the rules and in the structure of higher educational institutions. Chapter V has been devoted to so-called members of the economies profession's (more personal factors); it is based largely on biographical information respecting the professional lives of representative Dutch economists. It thus was possible to examine the status of economics as a professional field and to observe certain changes relevant to its professionalization. Chapters VI and VII, respectively, are devoted to the nature of Dutch economic thought and to foreign impacts on Dutch economists. In Chapter VI the major writings of our representative group are examined with respect to the relative importance of economic history, and applied econo- mics in nineteenth-century Dutch economic inquiry. Chapter VII reveals Dutch eclecticism respecting economic ideas of foreign origin. A list of Dutch translations of foreign books on economics is presented in an appen- dix to Chapter VII.
