First edition of a rare emblem book. The engravings depict the traditional Anima and Divine Love in various situations and predicaments. The illustrations are inspired by the ones in Amoris Divini et Humani Effectus, Antwerp 1626. Each emblem is accompanied by a quotation from St. Augustine.
A second edition with four more plates was published by the same publisher in 1639, an English version in London, titled Sparkles of Divine Love in 1648 and a facsimile in 1971.
Michael Hoyer was an Augustinian monk, born at Artois in 1593, died 1650 at Ryssel.
