Contains a brief history of publishing at Oxford before the University's Delegates took charge of the printing office in 1690, before narrating in considerable detail the development and productions of a learned press. The second (and even possibly, third) volume(s) have, as yet, not materialized. This volume is the first of two (or possibly three) which will deal for the first time comprehensively and in detail with the history of the Oxford University Press. It begins with a brief account of publishing at Oxford before 1690, when the University's Delegates of the Press took charge of a printing-office previously conducted and equipped by John Fell and three partners. It narrates in more detail the development and production of a learned press managed by the Delegates until 1780, when the decision was taken to depute to businessmen the management of a separate Bible Press under University control. An appendix gives the titles of all the books printed at the University Press in the years 1690-1780. The Press has older records than any other in England and they reveal a good deal of interest about the history of the book trade and of learned editing. The author was given unlimited access to the archives by the Delegates, and this has enabled him to add substantially to the information hitherto printed."""
