Jean-Michel Coulon has spent his life creating, drawing and painting ... working in conditions of almost absolute secrecy. He did not let anyone enter his studio and after his death, in 2014, his family discovered a structured, intact and original work that includes more than 800 paintings and collages. From the age of 20, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. From the outset his works are all abstract. During the post-war years he was introduced into artistic circles such as the Second School of Paris and became close to painters such as Nicolas de Staël, Andre Lanskoy, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes. His beginnings are promising since 30 years he exhibited alone at the Jeanne Bucher gallery, whose guestbook testifies to the presence of artists who will soon become famous. Among them, Rothko, Vieillard, Deyrolle or Arnal. The following year, in 1950, he participated in a group exhibition in New York. Then, however, without ever ceasing to create, he will refuse almost all exhibition proposals. This book offers to discover the work of an artist who refused the recognition of the general public during his lifetime, while he dedicated his life to his work.
