Very attractive binding, good condition (clean, tight, fresh, minor foxing to the 7 plates). The original title and publisher's name and a strip of the original cloth binding have been attached to the back endpaper. Later binding with new endpapers. A desirable first edition. Low wrote his dedication to Brooke in Leiden (Netherlands) on 13 december 1847.
Rare account on Sarawak. interesting early view on a part of Borneo at the beginning of the rule by the British White Rajah James Brooke, a former military officer of the East India Company. Brooke visited the territory in 1839 and assisted the sultan in suppressing a revolt. He was rewarded in 1841 by being granted the position of rajah of Sarawak. Low served James Brooke for over two years, travelling extensively throughout Sarawak. He wrote this book while acting as Colonial Secretary to the Government in Labuan.
He studied the Malays, Dyaks, Kayans, Kenyahs. Milanos, Muruts, Kadayans, Bisayahs and other tribes.
The flora and fauna, i.a. monkeys, orang utan, panther, reptiles, domestic fowls & animals. Other subjects: Dutch and English settlers, Muller's expedition, slave debtors, piracy, opium, exports, manners, 'price' of a wife, language, cookery, head hunting, taboos, tattooing, war, business trades, etc.
