- The two-volume Authenticum novellarum constitutionum Iustiniani, versio vulgata, edited by Gustav Ernst Heimbach (1803-1867), is a critical edition of the medieval Latin version of the Novellae of Emperor Justinian I. The Novellae form the final part of Justinian’s Corpus Iuris Civilis and contain laws promulgated after 534. Heimbach reconstructed the so-called versio vulgata, the standard Western medieval text of the Latin Novellae, by collating numerous manuscripts from major European libraries, including those in Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Munich, and elsewhere. His edition includes extensive prolegomena, a full critical apparatus, and appendices recording textual variants. Published originally between 1846 and 1851, this work reflects the nineteenth-century scholarly effort to restore classical legal sources through philological methods. I
