HOLLAND SOUTH-AFRICA LINE
An exchange between artists from the Netherlands and South Africa
Although today we communicate a lot, pretty much by telephone, fax, mobile or e-mail, it is hardly always a matter of true dialogue. And a real dialogue is an essential condition for avoiding misunderstandings, for exchanging information, for inspiration. That dialogue should be there in all branches of society, in all possible fields, in all possible means of communication.
In the project Holland South Africa Line (HSAL) it is a special kind of dialogue, that is between artists. The choice to organize a dialogue between Dutch and South African artists originates from a legitimate personal experience. All experience from her current residence Amsterdam and with more memories of her homeland, South African artist Andrea Rolfes asked herself that question: how would other young Dutch artists communicate with South African artists? Could artists from countries with such strong social, political and cultural ties be a source of inspiration to one another?
Therefore this initiative tries to offer artists from two different continents the possibility to start a dialogue about life and work as a visual artist. And to confront them with the role of guest in foreign working and living circumstances and of host at their own home. Participants in HSAL are artists from different disciplines who all search for an identity in a cultural, national, historical or personal sense and who use the exchange to continue the expedition.
Selected for Holland: Tiong Ang, Paul Bogaers, Clea Daiber, Femke van Heerikhuizen, Judith Krebbekx, Jurgen Meekel and Sandra de Wolf. Selected for South Africa: Bridget Ann Baker, Kevin Brand, Nadja Kim Daehnke, Abrie Fourie, Isaac Nkosinathi Khanyile, Dorcas Mamabolo and Stephen Maqashela.
