Theo Bergstrom
It is with enormous sadness that I am writing about Theo Bergstrom who died peacefully at home in his Shoreditch studio on May 22, 1998. Theo was such a unique, inspirational and gentle soul that those many people who have fallen under his spell have suffered an enormous and premature loss. In the 60's he became Head of Photography at the College of Art & Design in Leicester where he lived with his first wife, Lorna and their six children.
In the early 70's Theo came to London to work as an advertising photographer and became involved with the development of lasers, holograms and the exhibition 'Light Fantastic' at the Royal Academy. During this time he also set up a publishing company producing books such as 'Stonhenge', 'The Thames' and 'Hadrians Wall' featuring his reportage photography.
In the late 70's he changed direction and began working mainly in the food and still-life areas. His assistant from those days, the photographer Tessa Musgrave, later became his second wife. Theo's work exhibited an outstanding creative talent and was always conducted in a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere regardless of the media maelstrom this business often generates.
His attention to detail and dedication to the task at hand was awesome, sometimes scouring the country (and skips!) for the tiniest prop or spending nights sleeping rough in search of just the right moment. He was not only a master of the craft of photography but also an expert improviser with great energy, passion, originality and love of the unusual.
His eye for quality materials, colour and light was not only reflected in his sets and photographs but also in his flair for creating harmonious spaces to live and work in. In 1990 he converted his stunning loft studio and roof garden in Shoreditch with the help of his two sons, William & Izaak (who now spend much of their time converting other photographers' studios), and created a beautiful home, garden and pond with Tessa in Norfolk in the 80's where many happy weekends were spent.
One of Theo's greatest gifts was his ability to pass on his knowledge by example, he was a great teacher. The encouragement he gave to his assistants was immense and he was a wonderful friend and mentor to many of them even years afterwards, myself included.
As a photographer working in the abstract field, it was strange timing that during what proved to be Theo's last few days, I found myself involved in a shoot I can only describe as 'very Theo' - bits of ice, glass, unusual lighting and having to try something previously untried.
I felt compelled to call Theo for help and advice which, even from his hospital bed, he was genuinely pleased to give. Although he so sadly never got to see the results, he is truly there in the pictures. It is a great tribute to his photographic influence that so many of his ex-students and assistants earn their living today in photography.
Wherever he went, Theo gathered and attracted a collection of loyal friends and colleagues who often sought and enjoyed his perspective on life as well as work. His magnetic charm and quiet sense of humour will be sorely missed, but Theo's spirit will live on in all those he touched. With love Theo, wherever you may now be.

Minpunten worden altijd vermeld en nooit verzwegen. U krijgt wat u ziet en u krijgt wat u leest; nooit onaangename verrassingen achteraf.
