His murder mystery novel is a fine addition to Japrisot's work. I feel it references a new technique--shifting points of view--as with William Falkner's 'Sound and the Fury.' We see the careful unfolding of events as told by 'Elle' and by 'Ping-Pong', her not overly intelligent but dedicated husband. Through this technique, it takes quite a while for the reader to understand what is going to be 'deadly' about that particular summer. We begin by seeing the 'why' of the plot as injury leads to obsession and then on to a quest for vengeance. As in other of Japrisot's work, the chief female protagonist is, say, 'difficult' psychologically or, in this case, mentally impaired. Men play a supporting role.
This novel is 'sexy' in that Elle is calculatingly promiscuous and there are many 'no panties', relatively graphic sex scenes on the pages. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that the sex act has powerful consequences, whether it is coerced, casual or part of a marriage. This is the 'classic' French' novel for 1960's American readers to salivate over and to pass on to their friends. These days, it seems ahead of its time and the sexy psychology blazed a trail for other authors.
Aside from the sex, Japrisot offers up a well-drawn picture of working class life in a typical French village. We enter homes; see men at work and women tending to family matters and household tasks; go to the cinema or the disco on the weekend and so on. We come to feel we know these people. As an earlier reviewer points out so well, the novel also has its moments of tenderness and caring. We are left in a thoughtful frame of mind: things happen; not all of them are good; not every life is filled with dramatic events; the unexpected can plunge a person into a strange and different world, almost in a moment.
This novel is a major work by a great international author and it deserves to live on.
