- Marie Jean Antoine Nicolas de Caritat, marquis de Condorcet (1743-1794) was a central figure in the widespread eighteenth-century effort to apply scientific methods of inquiry to all aspects of social affairs. In this book, Keith Michael Baker provides the first comprehensive historical analysis of the nature and development of Condorcet's conception of social science as it took shape in the general context of Enlightenment thought. As a mathematician and man of letters, political theorist and social reformer, scientific statesman and revolutionary deputy, Condorcet was remarkable, even in an encyclopedic age, for the range of his interests and activities. Accordingly, Professor Baker discusses Condorcet's idea of social science - the unifying theme in his thought and action - in as broad a framework as possible. Bringing together material from many fields, the author reconstructs Condorcet's mental universe: the problems posed for him by scientific and social developments and the intellectual tools he used to solve them. In doing so, the author suggests the broad intellectual trends underlying Condorcet's particular transition from natural philosophy to social mathematics. Professor Baker begins with an analysis of Condorcet's formation as a philosophe. He then devotes the first part of his book to the scientific model Condorcet found implied in Newtonian natural philosophy. The author suggests that Newtonian science not only sustained the conviction that scientific methods are applicable to human affairs but in some respects even required such applicability. Through the mathematics of probability, Condorcet believed, the Newtonian model could be applied to the whole domain of human experience. In the second part of the book, the author demonstrates how Condorcet applied this scientific model to his liberal political theory in an attempt to make social choice completely rational. The tensions inherent in Condorcet's thinking, heightened by his efforts to apply his theories in the midst of the French Revolution, are fully analyzed. In a final chapter, Professor Baker reinter- prets Condorcet's best-known work, the Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind. The author discusses Condorcet's relationship to his principal successors, Saint-Simon and Comte, and redefines their indebtedness to him.
