- This is the most complete modern critical English translation of the work of the late-medieval thinker Nicolaus Cusanus (1401-1464). The edition brings together all the important treatises of Cusanus, both speculative-philosophical and theological, in chronological and thematic coherence. The texts range from abstract metaphysical works (De docta ignorantia, De possest, De apice theoriae) to dialogues (Idiota de mente), mystical writings (De visione Dei), and interreligious reflections (De pace fidei, Cribratio alkorani). The work is provided with introductions, explanatory notes, and an extensive index. They are regarded as the standard edition for English-language researchers. Nicolaus Cusanus was a cardinal, jurist, philosopher, mathematician, and mystic. He stood at the crossroads of medieval scholasticism and Renaissance humanism. His core idea is docta ignorantia: true knowledge begins with the awareness of the unknowability of God and the infinite. He developed a dynamic vision of truth, knowledge, and reality in which opposites coincide (coincidentia oppositorum). Living during a period of religious conflict, political change, and early Renaissance humanism, he sought harmony between faith and reason, unity within diversity, and peace among religions. Although controversial in his own time, he later influenced major thinkers such as Leibniz and Hegel. Today he is recognized as a key figure in the development of modern philosophy and a pioneer of interreligious dialogue and speculative theology.
