On manifold occasions, Spenser will be hurt during this novel which is about many good byes. Not only leaves Spensers long-time love for California and leaves him behind in despair right at the beginning of the story. But also he will be shot at and hit dangerously almost at the end of the story.
This story is so twisted around a kind of church, ballet and dance, drug traffic and violent fights between competing mobsters that even Spenser loses track of the real bad people.
Fortunately all his friends (Hawk, Quirk, Paul etc.) stay with him and cover his back, may it be emotionally or during his fight against the thugs.
After all, a really packed story that keeps the action but also shows strong and heroic Spenser in new ways of being vulnerable.
