The Tasman Sea lies between Australia and New Zealand. This 1200-mile span of lonely water, subject to viciously unpredictable weather, is the setting for the stories in this volume.
Just over 25 years ago, in January 1928, the first men who tried to fly the Tasman died in the attempt. They were forced into the sea, in circumstances which will never now be known, when probably from 300 to 500 miles from their goal. Thousands of New Zealanders, waiting to acclaim them, lost hope slowly as the long hours dragged by after false rumour had encouraged the expectation that the flight had succeeded Those airmen who never came were John R. Moncrieff and George Hood.
But later the same year two of the world's finest aviators. Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm, with two companions, did fly the Tasman. Their “old bus” the Southern Cross. circled Wellington in triumph on the morning of September 11, 1928, and then flew south to land at Christchurch.
The men and the lone woman who followed these pioneers added exciting cap tors to the Tasman story Guy Menzies, who told everyone he intended to fly across Australia from Sydney to Perth but who flew the Tasman instead and turned his aircraft and himself upside down in a swamp when he arrived; Francis Chichester, whose island-hopping crossing in a Moth seaplane was a marvel of navigation and determination; Kingsford Smith and Ulm (separately now), who crossed and recrossed in the Southern Cross and the faith in Australia.
Then came Hewett and Kay, Whitehead and Nicholl, Pat O'hara, Jean Batten, Fine Clark, A. K. Cluster, Harry Newton A.J. Bradshaw, the men of the flying-boats, all bringing courage and skill to the blazing of the Tasman air trails.
Wings Across the Tasman does the fliers and their feats complete justice. It is the full and fascinating record of Tasman flights over 25 years.
