On 30th October, 1941, twenty-two pilots of 258 Fighter Squadron left Scotland for an unknown destination.
The next entry in the Squadron diary lists only nine of their names - the rest are either dead or prisoners of war.
Written by one of those missing pilots, this is what happened to those lost four months. It is a story of bitter aerial battles over the jungle against the Japanese; and a desperate rearguard fight to hold Singapore, Sumatra and Java, already at risk from poor morale and supply difficulties. It is also the story of the struggle to maintain airworthy planes and to keep enough pilots alive to fly them.
