Since his first exhibition in 1926, the human form has obsessed Henry Moore. In particular, two themes have dominated his work: the 'Reclining Figure' and 'Mother and Child' motif. Even when he departs from them, it is only to explore objects that have an affinity with the human figure. The sculpture reproduced here concentrates upon the 'Mother and Child' motif. A theme that has persisted throughout the ages, it is one that is periodically debased: only a great artist like Michelangelo, Giotto or Moore is able to restore it to its full significance.
