Thus The Times, in an obituary of unparalleled eulogy referred to the passing of Christopher Palles, last Lord Chief Baron of the Court of Exchequer in Ireland. Born on Christmas Day, 1831, Palles ascended the Bench at the early age of forty-two, and spent another forty two years in the administration of justice in Ireland before his retirement in 1916. During that time what had been a judicial figure became a judicial institution and his reputation as a lawyer has led to his opinions being treated with almost reverential awe by members of the legal profession throughout the whole of the common law world. Such a life, which spanned so many momentous years in the history of Ireland, could not fail to exercise a considerable influence on the develop ment of the country, and this biography of Chief Baron Palles is an attempt to give some account of his work as a jurist and as an educational reformer, and also to delineate the character of the man. Modest of his great intel lectual attainments, passionately con vinced of the efficacy of the common law to achieve justice, imbued with the virtue of tolerance, his services to the public life of the country were no less than his remarkable contributions to her jurisprudence. Now, forty years after the Chief Baron's death, the author has tried to describe his life and work and to show how he acquired his unusual reputation for rectitude and scholarship. Both as a picture of one of the immortals of the law and as a contribution to the history of modern Ireland, Christopher Palles is a book of considerable importance.
