The second printing The Aim of A. S. Yakovlev's ‘The Aim of a Lifetime’ contains additional new information on the development of aviation in recent years as well as the author's own remmniscences of some outstanding scientists and engineers and other personalities whose efforts served to build up our country's military might.
While describing his own activities as a designer and public figure, the author gives a truthful and rofoundly informed account of the main and most charphases of the acteristic development of Soviet Aviation. He gives an exhaustive analysis of such turning points in the history of the Soviet aircraft industry as the First Five-Year Plan period which saw the establishment of a powerful national aircraft industry as the First Five-Year Plan period which saw the establishment of a powerful national aircraft industry; the late 1930s, during which we succeeded in radically reorganising that industry and thereby securing the qualitative superiority of Soviet aviation in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945); and, finally, our transition jet aviation.
One of the merits of this book is the author's candid treatment of the difficulties encountered and the way they were overcome both in time of peace and in wartime. This is valuable for the edification of the rising generation , which should know about the gigantic effort the Party and the people exerted in order to build up their country's industrial and military might.
The author conveys the romantic atmosphere that surrounds an aircraft designer's work, gives the reader an insight into his creativity, describes his unceasing quest of the new, his struggle against the forces of nature as well as against human inertia, routine and conservatism. The reader will learn about the torments of creative endeavour and the satisfaction of technological achievement; he will meet outstanding scientists, designers, test pilots, names prominent in Soviet and foreign aviation.
I know of no other Soviet literary work that describes with equal force how designer goes about creating new aircraft.
A. S. Yakovlev's book is an important historical record. I believe that his book will furnish the historians of Soviet aviation, as the historians of Soviet science and technology in general, with a wealth of instructive and factual information.
Written in a simple and lively manner and abounding in exciting episodes convincing veracity, this book will doubtlessly appeal to the widest range of readers.
